Nathaniel Green

Background

  • Born August 1742 in Warwick, Rhode Island.
  • The Greene family helped establish the colony in the 1630s, and were devout Quakers.
  • He was an avid reader and took an active part in community affairs. He helped to establish the first public school in Coventry, RI.
  • He also added books on military science which he studied diligently.
  • His growing passion of military science grew strong disapproval from the pacifist Quaker church.
  • Eventually expelled from the church but remained a Quaker for life.

Service

  • Elected to the General Assembly of Rhode Island in 1770.
  • Helped organize a local militia group known as the Kentish Guards.
  • 1774: Married Catharine Littlefield and together they had six children.
