Background
- Born August 1742 in Warwick, Rhode Island.
- The Greene family helped establish the colony in the 1630s, and were devout Quakers.
- He was an avid reader and took an active part in community affairs. He helped to establish the first public school in Coventry, RI.
- He also added books on military science which he studied diligently.
- His growing passion of military science grew strong disapproval from the pacifist Quaker church.
- Eventually expelled from the church but remained a Quaker for life.
Service
- Elected to the General Assembly of Rhode Island in 1770.
- Helped organize a local militia group known as the Kentish Guards.
- 1774: Married Catharine Littlefield and together they had six children.
