Upcountry Road to Freedom: The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina

“The revolution was in the hearts and minds of the people…” –John Adams

While little remembered, the Southern Campaign of 1778-1781 were a major turning point in the American Revolution. With over 135 military engagements in South Carolina alone, the South proved to be a major stepping-stone in Patriot victory.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, it is important to consider the heroic acts of southern patriots who helped win the war for independence. This exhibit focuses on the efforts of South Carolinians and other prominent southern fighters on the road to freedom. It also considers voices of women, enslaved and free African Americans, and Indigenous peoples.
